Discovered in 1938 in the San Antonio River in Minas Berais Brazil, the original rough weighed 726.60 carats. It was named for Getulio Vargas who was then the President of Brasil. Harry Winston bought the rough and cut it into several gems, the largest retained the title of President Vargas, and was a 48.26 carat emerald cut. After selling the stone in 1944, Winston bought it back in 1958 and recut it to a flawless 44.17 carat stone which he sold in 1961.
